Language cannot be treated in a vacuum. I was confused by elementary-school grammar teachers who tried to teach me how to analyze the syntax of sentences. One told me that I needed to understand syntax to figure out how language works and how to do it right. I am now fully persuaded that, as St. Augustine suggests, kids may be better off without syntax until they know enough about language to put it in its proper place. Knowledge of the world is what language is.
