For an old book, this broad-brush overview of some of the salient problems in cybernetics is very insightful and full of useful suggestions. If you want a general overview of the work of some of the most important early figures in the information processing scene (including von Neumann, Turing, Pitts and McCulloch), you will probably find Jagjit Singh’s analysis and commentary quite enlightening.
