This monograph is a landmark in information theory. Turing lucidly expresses concepts on computation that were in infancy during the difficult years between world wars. These ideas on automata were then used in the war effort to assist in the complex tasks of breaking and making crypto-graphic codes and machines. Postwar government spending did not forget the contributions of the computer theorists, and the technology benefited greatly from the influx of funds.
