A word used to describe the nature or properties of a data item. Examples include: textual (character), numerical (number), temporal (date/time), financial (currency) and referential (unique ID or counter). Different types of data behave differently. You can multiply numbers and get predictable results. The results of multiplying words are absolutely unpredictable. Different types of information need different types of functions.
