In former usage, dementia meant madness or insanity. Now it is usually used to describe impairment or loss of cognitive or mental abilities due to disease process. Dementia is distinguished from amentia – severe congenital cognitive deficiency. It is important to study pathologies so as to avoid designing machines that are susceptible to antisocial pathological behaviors.
