Most computers use digital circuits. That means that each register in the machine is capable of representing exactly two states: 0 or 1. Using many zeros and ones, you can represent integers in base 2 or binary code. You can use numbers to represent letters or abstract formulae. Digital computers use zeros and ones for everything.
