Actions or responses that seem to be innate or so ingrained in a person’s psyche that they are automatic. Reflex actions are called “knee-jerk reactions.” There are physiological things such as elevated heart rate and hypersensitive skin (goose bumps) that are built into the nervous system. These are even more instinctive than reflexes.
