A word or phrase used to represent something it is not or one or more characteristics of that thing. The presence of metaphor in human language is ubiquitous. While it often makes language more beautiful or poetic, it also can make understanding more difficult. Intentionally indirect forms of speech such as metaphor, irony, humor, deception and oblique reference have traditionally been nearly impossible for automated systems to correctly derive intent.
