A guess based on generalization. Given a knowledge about some things and how they work, we can observe similarities and predict the structures and functions of similar things. These predictions are theories, and they serve as a basis for scientific inquiry and discovery. We can formally or informally build probabilistic models that can give us very well-supported theories before experimentation begins.
