The ability to empathize is the first sense of this word that comes to mind. To truly discern the intent of another, knowledge, experience and empathy work together. “Understanding”is a word that is often used to indicate knowledge with wisdom and somehow implies experience. It is one of the more noble terms for cognitive capacity.
