Title: Learning and Cognition: The Design of the Mind
Publisher: Pearson, 2009
This introduction to human learning and its application to education explores theories of knowledge, complex cognition, and human intelligence. It presents an interesting overview of the human mind from various perspectives. The author discusses the architecture of the mind, and explains how simple acts of memory and complex cognition may lead to creativity and deep scientific or artistic insight. Topics include: memory, motivation, cognitive development, the brain, and intelligence. I like Martinez’s (written while a professor at UC Irvine) interdisciplinary (eclectic) approach and his forays into theories of knowledge, expert-novice differences, talent development, and a broad view of intelligence.
